Executive Director, Head of Fixed Income, Co-CIO — Total Return Fixed Income
Our fixed income team brings together the opportunity to diversify all the different forms of risk that are just naturally there in portfolios. And so, how do we work together – how do we mitigate risk? [It’s] not easy. But I think the key ways to achieve it, one, are, the fundamental process. The fundamental process at Delaware fixed income is built around individual idea generation, individual security selection, [and] broad diversification, so that diversification in and of itself helps to build portfolios that will deliver more consistent returns and raise your chances of success. It’s about managing an appropriate level of risk and appropriate level of volatility for your clients’ returns so that the client doesn’t ultimately make mistakes because you’ve been too volatile.

It’s challenging to stay focused — and stay focused on the medium term. There’s so much noise — there’s so many new things coming through — news items, and there’s always, I guess, that fear of you haven’t seen something or you don’t fully understand something. And then when you add in the concept that markets do move up and down and you can make decisions that do turn out wrong, it can affect, I guess, the yin-yang on the thinking, and I think it’s all about maintaining focus on the medium term — focusing on what you’re trying to deliver for clients.

It’s important to make sure that we’re sharing our investment views with our clients so that they understand the considerations that went into the portfolio positioning. There are times when our clients will think about risks differently than we at Delaware are, but that doesn’t mean we still aren’t accountable and responsible to them to make sure that we are alleviating their concerns about their own risks and the way we’re managing the portfolios.

Fixed income securities and bond funds can lose value, and investors can lose principal, as interest rates rise that also may be affected by economic conditions that hinder an issuer’s ability to make interest and principal payments on its debt.
